We need shuttles to pass the weft thread through the opening, the shed. between the warp threads. This act is called the pick.
There are the simple flat shuttles to wind the weft thread.
Meta also sells rugshuttles on which you can wind more (or thicker) weft yarn.
Then there are the boat shuttles, where a cardboard pipe (paper quill) fits on which the yarn is wound (using a bobbinwinder). The shuttle is thrown by hand through the shed.
Finally. there are fly shuttles, those are shot using a mechanical system through the shed. The loom must be equipped with a flyshuttle beater (the beater has at each end a shuttle box).
All shuttles are made of beech wood, fly shuttles and boat shuttles are waxed. Glimakra shuttles are in birch wood.
